Introducing Bounties

October 27, 2006 14:45, contributed by: seagull
Thanks to the recent introduction of the Seagull Developer Network
(SDN) and our svn/trac hosting service[1] I'm happy to announce we
have managed to build up some funds for the project.

Part of the original intent of SDN was to be able to encourage
contributions to the Seagull project through a bounty program.  If
you are unfamiliar with the term bounty, it's a long and well-
established tradition in open source circles where developers are
paid cash to fix bugs and contribute new features to a codebase.  One
example quite close to home is Horde's bounty project[2], though you
can find similar examples in gnome[3] and bountysource[4].

We currently have $650 in the account and I'd like to kick things off
by taking suggestions which tasks are most worthy of bounties.  A few
that come to mind are

  - make seagull work with CGI
  - db table prefixes
  - LU integration
  - improving/redesigning Seagull site

but let's hear your suggestions for tasks and what you think they're
worth.  I'd like to get the CGI probs fixed which IMO needs to be
done before 0.6.1 can go out, so will keep a preference for that.

Another more obvious goal of a bounty program is to try and encourage
the companies that use Seagull for profit (I think that includes most
of us who have employers) to put some money back in the project and
help keep things moving along.

Also once bounties are sponsored, your chances of getting the cash
will be a lot higher if you've done helpful things like fix bugs,
improve the documentation, help out on ML and forum.

So let's hear what you want most fixed/improved in Seagull and the
results will shortly appear on the seagullproject.org homepage.

cheers

Demian
